Rotary Aerospace Fundamentals: Aerofoils, Dissymmetry of Lift & Blade Flapping

Unlike airplanes that depend on fixed wings propelled through the air by forward engine thrust, a helicopter is an aircraft whose wings are spun mechanically around a central rotor mast. Each rotor blade acts as a rotating wing, generating lift through differential air pressure according to Bernoulli’s principle and Newton’s third law of action-reaction.

As a helicopter moves forward, it encounters the aerodynamic problem known as dissymmetry of lift: the advancing blade moves into the oncoming airflow, experiencing higher relative airspeed and generating excess lift, while the retreating blade moves with the airflow, experiencing lower airspeed and reduced lift. Without correction, this imbalance would cause the helicopter to violently roll toward the retreating side.

Aviation pioneer Juan de la Cierva solved this problem by introducing horizontal flapping hinges. Today’s rotor systems allow blades to flap upward on the advancing side (reducing effective angle of attack and shedding lift) and flap downward on the retreating side (increasing angle of attack and restoring lift), automatically equalizing lift across the entire rotor disc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the basic principle behind how a helicopter hovers?

A helicopter hovers when total vertical aerodynamic lift produced by the spinning main rotor blades exactly equals the total gross weight of the aircraft, with zero net horizontal thrust vectoring.

What is dissymmetry of lift in rotary flight?

Dissymmetry of lift occurs in forward flight when the advancing rotor blade moves faster relative to incoming air than the retreating blade, creating unequal lift across the disc that is equalized through blade flapping.

Why does a helicopter need a tail rotor?

A tail rotor produces lateral thrust that counteracts the torque reaction exerted on the fuselage by the spinning main rotor engine, allowing the pilot to maintain heading and control directional yaw.
