Drive Train Engineering: Turboshaft Engines, Main Gearboxes & Tail Drives

The drive train of a modern turbine helicopter represents one of the most demanding power-transmission environments in mechanical engineering. Turboshaft engines generate rotational speeds in excess of 20,000 to 40,000 RPM at the power turbine, which must be stepped down through a multi-stage planetary main transmission gearbox (MGB) to approximately 300 to 450 RPM at the main rotor mast.

Crucial to helicopter safety is the freewheeling unit (sprag clutch) located between the engine and transmission. If an engine seizes or loses power, the freewheeling clutch disengages instantaneously, allowing the main rotor to spin freely without engine drag so the pilot can enter autorotation.

A secondary output shaft from the main gearbox drives the tail rotor drive shaft, which runs through intermediate bearing hangers along the tail boom to a 90-degree tail gearbox. This assembly steps up rotational speed to approximately 2,000 to 3,000 RPM to provide sufficient aerodynamic counter-torque from a compact rotor diameter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the function of a helicopter swashplate?

The swashplate translates stationary control inputs from the pilot’s cyclic and collective sticks into dynamic pitch angle changes on the spinning rotor blades as they rotate around the mast.

What does a freewheeling clutch do in a helicopter?

A freewheeling clutch automatically decouples the main rotor system from the engine during engine failure, allowing the blades to continue spinning freely to enable safe autorotation.

What creates the distinctive ‘whop-whop’ blade slap sound?

Blade slap is caused by Blade-Vortex Interaction (BVI), where a rotor blade slices directly through the turbulent trailing tip vortex shed by the preceding blade during descent or high-speed flight.
