Ramp Hazard Management: Rotor Coning, Tail Strike Zones & Underwater Egress

Helicopter safety begins long before liftoff on the airport ramp or hospital helipad. The area surrounding an operating helicopter contains lethal hazards: main rotor blades can flap down to within four to five feet of the ground during startup, shutdown, or strong wind gusts, while spinning tail rotors rotate at several thousand RPM, becoming nearly invisible and spinning directly at human head height.

Passengers and ground crews must follow strict approach protocols: approach and depart only from the front or front-quartering angles within the pilot’s direct line-of-sight, crouch slightly to maximize blade clearance, carry long items horizontally below waist height, and never walk aft of the passenger cabin doors near the tail rotor.

For overwater operations, Helicopter Underwater Egress Training (HUET)—commonly known as ‘dunker training’—is critical. Because the top-heavy engine and transmission cause ditching helicopters to invert within seconds in water, HUET trains crews to maintain reference points, wait for violent water turbulence to subside, push out emergency exit windows, and inflate survival vests only after clearing the submerged airframe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people duck when walking toward a helicopter?

People duck because main rotor blades flex and flap downward during startup, shutdown, or sudden wind gusts, potentially bringing blade tips within five feet of the ground.

Why is the tail rotor considered the most dangerous part of a helicopter on the ground?

The tail rotor spins at over 2,000 RPM, making it completely invisible to human eyes, and rotates at head height without a protective cage on most conventional helicopters.

What is HUET training in helicopter operations?

HUET (Helicopter Underwater Egress Training) prepares offshore pilots and passengers to survive a water ditching by strapping into a simulator that is submerged and flipped upside-down in a pool to practice emergency escape.
