Commercial Rotorcraft Charters: Wet Rates, Pilot Checkouts & Tour Economics

Helicopter rentals operate under two primary models: passenger charter flights conducted under FAA Part 135 (where an air carrier provides the aircraft and commercial pilot), and aircraft rental for licensed pilots under FAA Part 91 (solo time-building or personal travel).

For licensed pilots renting an airframe, flight schools offer ‘wet rates’ (inclusive of fuel and oil) or ‘dry rates’ (customer pays fuel directly). Before renting, operators require a comprehensive flight checkout covering emergency autorotations, hovering auto drills, slope landings, and a minimum of 5 to 10 hours in make and model to satisfy aviation underwriter requirements.

Scenic tour pricing is driven by aircraft seat utilization and strict municipal heliport landing fees. A 15-minute coastal or city skyline tour typically costs $150 to $250 per passenger on shared flights, while private charters range from $600 to $1,800 per hour depending on whether the airframe is a four-seat piston Robinson R44 or a six-seat turbine Airbus EC130.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you tip a helicopter tour pilot?

Yes. It is customary to tip helicopter tour pilots 10% to 20% of the tour price ($20 to $50 per couple) for smooth flying, safety briefings, and informative local narration.

Can a private pilot rent a helicopter and fly anywhere?

Yes, provided the pilot has completed the flight school’s checkout flight, meets insurance hour minimums, files required flight plans, and lands only at airports, public helipads, or private sites with prior permission.

Are helicopter tours safe for people prone to motion sickness?

Modern helicopters provide smooth forward flight. Passengers prone to motion sickness should request the front co-pilot seat for optimal horizon visibility and take anti-motion sickness medication 30 minutes prior to departure.
